Before I came to Pathways I found myself struggling to find employment in hairstyling, the trade I studied at college. Being a single mother, with no family to help with my children on a regular basis, made it hard to find employment. The wait lists for before and after school programs take a long time – as I write this one year later my children are still on the wait list.
I’ve spent the last 5 years advocating for both of my sons. My 12 year old was diagnosed with a learning disability and my 9 year old was diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. As a single parent it is next to impossible to work and advocate. I was very lucky to have assistance from Ontario Works.
Pathways was brought to my attention by my Ontario Works case worker, Angie. She understood my situation and wanted to help me excel. It is hard raising children with special needs and trying to be employed.
I was happy to learn that the Administrative and Clerical Training (ACT) class was during school hours, but I still had concerns that employment could have different requirements.
After my orientation I knew that I would be able to successfully complete this course, and find employment in a different field as long as I was able to make a few changes.
The ACT class was very comprehensive in many Microsoft programs. I enjoyed our Instructor’s daily inspirational and motivational videos. She was very personable and pleasant to work with, which made the days go by quickly.
We had frequent visits from other Pathways’ staff and educational speakers, which gave us more insight into the community and networking. While attending this course I realized that I was able to apply my skills in other fields of employment.
Starting My Co-op
Our course required a 2 week co-op placement. The incredible networking opportunities within Pathways allowed me to apply my skills at the London Life Insurance Company. After completing my co-op I was offered a permanent staff position. Each day this allows me to work while my children are at school. We are able to spend evenings and weekends with each other. My family is very proud of this accomplishment.
Transitioning to Employment
Pathways was very helpful answering many questions and concerns I had during the transition from Ontario works to employment. They assisted me with any last minute paper work and appointments, and gave each ACT student a graduation to remember.
Moving Forward
I would highly recommend Pathways. Before coming here I set up long-term goals that, until I had Pathways’ assistance, I was not able to achieve. I was hopeful and didn’t think anything less of myself for taking a detour that still met my needs in employment, as well as single parenting and raising my children.
What does your new role mean for your children?
My children are very proud of me and always looking forward to our weekend plans and relaxing after a long day at school and work.
My Takeaway:
It’s okay to try something new. Remember to ask for help when you need it, and never give up hope
